Engineering Solutions for Australian Port Infrastructure

Australia’s nacent offshore wind sector is characterized by ambitious build-out targets but at the same time faces insufficient port infrastructure. Furthermore, traditional Transport & Installation (T&I) methodologies utilizing Heavy Lift Jack-up Vessels (HLJVs) to commute between port and offshore installation sites face a critical bottleneck as next-generation wind turbine generator (WTG) components exceeding 20 MW outgrow conventional harbor capacities. This evolution is rendering conventional HLJV logistics increasingly impractical, resulting in major spatial, operational, and commercial challenges.

This memorandum explains how feeder concepts such as FEEDERDOCK - keeping the installation vessel offshore and transporting components via specialized feeder vessels - can use existing multipurpose infrastructure, reduce berth, dredging, and quay-reinforcement requirements while protecting ongoing port operations. In light of a recent multimillion-euro European port incident, feeder concepts represent not only an operational advantage but a critical risk-mitigation strategy for Australia.
